Gulfport man sentenced to life in prison

Posted: Updated:
HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Wednesday, a Harrison County jury convicted a Gulfport man of possession of a controlled substance which led to the judge sentencing him to life in prison for being a habitual offender. District Attorney Joel Smith said David Lee May, 36, was convicted because of a traffic stop that led to his arrest on November 23, 2011.

Smith said on that day Biloxi police officers conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 10. May was the passenger in the car and was found to be in possession of cocaine and marijuana after investigators found the drugs in his shoe.

According to Smith, it took the jury less than 15 minutes to reach their guilty verdict. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors presented Judge Larry Bourgeois with evidence of May's four prior convictions making him a habitual offender. May's previous convictions included attempted robbery, which is classified as a violent crime that requires a mandatory life sentence in Mississippi. Other convictions include possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, escape and burglary.
