Grant aims to improve bicycle safety on Georgia roads

Posted: Updated:

Georgia Bikes, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting bicycling, will be distributing information statewide on bicyclist rights and safety and working with state officials to improve roadway safety for cyclists thanks to a grant.

The $103,700 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety is part of the Share the Road bicycle program and will continue through September 2014.

The grant will allow Georgia Bikes to distribute thousands of Bicyclist Pocket Guides, booklets that cover bicyclist rights and responsibilities. It will also allow the organization to conduct certified workshops for traffic safety enforcement officers throughout the state. The group will also work with transportation officials to improve roadway safety in targeted areas.

"The Governor's Office of Highway Safety is committed to keeping everyone safe on our roads and highways, from the smallest precious cargo to the most seasoned drivers," said GOHS Director Harris Blackwood. "This grant will help Georgia Bikes keep our roads safer for cyclists and drivers alike in their cars and communities."

"With increases in bicyclist fatalities in the state since 2011, this support from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety is essential" says grant project director Brent Buice. "In addition to infrastructure improvements, the outreach and education efforts enabled by this grant will help us improve roadway safety for people on bikes."

Georgia Bikes hosts the annual Georgia Bike Summit, coordinates the Ride to the Capitol event and supports local bicycle safety organizations throughout Georgia. For more about bicycle safety and Georgia Bikes' programs, visit
