NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where on Dec. 14, 2012, 20 children and six adults lost their lives, Eyewitness News will share a little about each person's life and how their families are honoring their legacies.

Lauren Rousseau wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl, and died trying to protect her students.

"Finally at 30 (years old), she was going to be a teacher and she was happy about that," said Giles Rousseau, Lauren Rousseau's father.

Gilles Rousseau, of Southbury, was comforted by the fact that Lauren loved working at Sandy Hook Elementary School

"She was a great kid she loved teaching and she died doing what she wanted to do, what she loved to do," Gilles Rousseau said.

Gilles Rousseau said "she touched all the children."

"She would call me on her way home from school and she had a second job (as a) barista at Starbucks in Danbury," Gilles Rousseau said. "And the trip took about 20 minutes, she took the entire trip talking about the kids and what they did that day."

Eyewitness News asked Gilles Rousseau if he took any solace in knowing Lauren Rousseau died doing what she loved

"Yes, better than had she died in a car accident, even though it was horrible," Gilles Rousseau said. "I know she was standing in front of the kids taking the first bullets."

Gilles Rousseau said he wants other young people to follow in his daughter's footsteps and become teachers.

"We have from day one established scholarship at Danbury High School," Gilles Rousseau said.

Eyewitness News asked Gilles Rousseau how does it make him feel knowing his step-daughter will live on in future teachers

"She is going to be remembered that way," said Gilles Rousseau.

Lauren Rousseau is being memorialized with two scholarships in her name.
