MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) -

Nearly 150 soldiers from the Shoals and Quad Cities area are preparing for a year-long deployment in Afghanistan.

The 663rd Engineer Company and their families spent Wednesday afternoon in Muscle Shoals for their deployment ceremony. Company members will leave on Friday from Fort Bliss, where they will continue to train for another two months before leaving for Afghanistan.

Families, friends, community members and veterans gathered at the North Alabama Fairgrounds for the ceremony. The 663rd is a heavy construction unit, and will focus on roads, bridges and airfields, demolition and similar tasks with a focus on post support.

Soldiers said preparing to leave families is always the hardest part of deployment.

Company leaders are still working to see if the soldiers will be able to take leave for Christmas.
