JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Jackson County residents are reporting an increase in telephone scams. While the story of the caller tends to vary, Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen has a simple piece of advice: if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

Harnen said they are receiving reports of calls coming from the same number. The calls often concern lottery winnings, and all that the target needs to do is pay the taxes and the winnings can be sent to them.

Residents are also getting calls – again, from the same number – claiming they represent a legitimate charitable organization, asking if the target wishes to give this holiday season.

Unless you know them, Harnen said you need to be wary of people asking for money on the phone.

"If a charity wants money, send me a pamphlet and if I choose to give to you, I'll send a check. I'm not going to do it over the phone, that's just my personal thing. And that's just good advice, I think," said Harnen.

If someone calls saying you've won the lottery but you need to send them the tax money or any other money upfront, it's best to tell the caller to take it out of the winnings and send you the remainder.
