MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An effort to help a local domestic violence shelter began Tuesday in Morgan County. The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is working to collect food donations for battered women and their children. Each year, the drive is dedicated to a victim of domestic violence. This year, it is in honor of a woman who investigators say was beaten and killed by her ex-husband.

Deputies are placing donation bags on the doorsteps of 2,000 Morgan County homes. On the bags is a picture of Stacey Hagood, who authorities say was killed by Rodney Hagood at the home they shared in Lacey's Spring in February. The deputies will go back and pick up the bags, and the donations will go to the Hope Place domestic violence shelter. The food drive is how they get most of their non-perishable food for the entire year.

"The sheriff's food drive provides us with a lot of the food we use throughout the year. We have a very limited budget, and the food we get through that takes care of all of the canned goods, and dry food goods like pasta and rice," said Connie Kane, the Supervisory Case Manager at Hope Place.

This is the fifth year for the vent, which Sheriff Ana Franklin initiated. The first time, she was Sheriff-elect. Residents who do not get a donation bag and still want to help can drop of donations of non-perishable food items at the Morgan County Sheriff's Office or at any of the Morgan County volunteer fire departments. Donations will be collected through December 23rd.
