HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A sweet effort to help feed hungry neighbors was in full swing at the Madison County Farmers Market on Saturday.

Volunteers from the Society of St. Andrew, the Faith Presbyterian Church and other congregations bagged up to 28,000 pounds of sweet potatoes.  That's about 14 tons of taters that will be distributed to families who are having a tough time. Volunteers also bagged up 5,000 pounds of collard greens.

"These sweet potatoes do not meet the size requirements of local buyers," said Kathryn Strickland of Food Bank of North Alabama. "And rather than till them under in the fields, the farmers are making them available to our region's most vulnerable citizens."

The sweet potatoes were donated by Cullman County farmers. Organizers with the Food Bank of North Alabama said this will provide more than 20,000 servings.
