NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro police have arrested a man in connection to the fatal shooting last month of Nashville musician Wayne Mills.

Police say Mills, 44, was shot Nov. 23 at Pit and Barrel, which is located on 2nd Avenue South, and later died from his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Chris Ferrell, 44, is the owner of the business and was arrested on Friday following a grand jury indictment charging second-degree murder.

Police say Ferrell and Mills were inside the bar with a few friends and acquaintances before an argument broke out.

Michael Scott, a friend who was with Mills and the group, tells Channel 4 News that Mills and Ferrell started arguing when Mills began to smoke in a non-smoking area.

Others in the group left the bar during the argument and reported hearing gunshots.

Ferrell, who has a valid handgun carry permit, has claimed the shooting was in self-defense, and he has hired top defense attorney David Raybin.

Scott said the group of friends had attended the George Jones tribute concert earlier in the evening and then went drinking at a couple of bars before going to Pit & Barrel.

About 40 artists contributed to a show Wednesday at Tin Roof to benefit Mills' widow and son.

"Wayne had a lot of friends. He made a lot of people feel special, and it was genuine. It was heartfelt," said Eric Lee Beddingfield, friend and country music artist.

Mills' funeral will be held on Dec. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Arab High School auditorium in Arab, AL. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. and a private burial will follow at Brookwood Cemetery.

Ferrell is jailed on $300,000 bond.
