DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A Decatur man is in jail on multiple charges, including burglary, public intoxication, and kidnapping.

Jose Alvaro Dorsett Jr. broke into a window and climbed into an apartment on Kelly Avenue after 3 a.m. Friday morning. He awoke the 61-year-old female resident and abducted her, armed with a box cutter.

Once outside the building, the woman screamed for help, drawing the attention of neighbors who then came to her aid. Dorsett fled on foot during the confrontation.

The commotion drew the attention of a passing officer who saw the fight between Dorsett and the two men who came to the woman's aid. The officer was able to track down and detain Dorsett.

"We learned that Dorsett had been at a friend's house in the area and had smoked a large quantity of crack-cocaine. He was in some sort of delusional state. He believed he was being chased and his life was in danger. He kidnapped the victim in an effort to use her as a human shield to protect himself from who he believed was chasing him," said Lieutenant John Crouch.

Officers determined Dorsett was in no actual danger. The woman was not harmed during the incident.

Dorsett was initially charged with public intoxication, but after continued fights with arresting officers, he was charged with resisting arrest. After treatment at Decatur Morgan Hospital and further questioning by officers, he was charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree kidnapping.

Dorsett was out of jail on bond at the time on prior charges. The cases related to those charges have been continued.

He is being held at the Morgan County Jail on a total of $126,000 in bonds.
