Shreveport City Council passes "Be Fair Shreveport" Ordinance

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The Shreveport City Council passed the "Be Fair Shreveport" Ordinance on Tuesday. The ordinance provides protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Right now, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act is stalled in the House, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act does not cover sexual orientation.

Now, members of the LBGT community in Shreveport are protected from discrimination based on their Sexual Orientation.

"This is really great news. Not just for families like mine that have a gay family member but everybody in the city that wants our city to progress and move forward economically," says People Acting for Change (PACE) Communications Director Adrienne Critcher.

Many cities across the nation already have similar ordinances in place.

The ordinance was passed with a 6-1 vote.

The ordinance does have some exceptions, including broad exemptions for religious groups. "No church or religious non-profit would be affected by this at all. There are some exemptions for small businesses, small housing units," Critcher says.

In 2009, Mayor Glover signed an executive order to protect all city employees from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identification. If the "Be Fair Shreveport" Ordinance is passed, that protection will extend to all workers in the city of Shreveport.

Currently, some businesses do have those protections written into their by laws already.
