FRANKLIN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A former Franklin County Commissioner is in jail over theft allegations involving a livestock purchase.

Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said this case involves nearly $100,000 worth of sheep and goats.

Greg Smith is charged with theft and is being held at the county jail. Smith is a former county commissioner who did not seek re-election in 2012.

Investigators said Smith wrote two different checks for the livestock at the Northwest Alabama Livestock Barn on Highway 243, which raised a red flag to employees.

They said Smith had about 200 of the sheep and goats transported to his farm when workers discovered he didn't have the money to cover the checks. The Sheriff's Department was called in to investigate and the livestock returned to the barn.

"It's kind of something that's shocking, especially someone who's been in that position, but it really sends up some flags that maybe something is going on that we don't know about," said Oliver.
