The former commander of the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force was sentenced today on embezzlement charges.

Jeffrey Lynn Snyder, 55, pleaded guilty to embezzling $125,000 from the task force between June 2010 and June 2012. A judge sentenced him today to one year and one day in prison.

U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance, along with the FBI announced the charges in May. The plea deal said Snyder was responsible for depositing the money seized in drug busts, but instead pocketed some or all of the seized funds beginning in June 2010.

In a statement today, Vance said Snyder impaired the financial condition of the joint task force he was assigned to lead and violated the trust of his fellow officers.

Snyder is from Carrollton and was a 29-year veteran of the Tuscaloosa Police Department. He retired as a captain in December 2012. In 1989, he joined the narcotics task force and became its commander in 2002, according to Vance.

The West Alabama Narcotics Task force is made up of members from the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Northport Police Department, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office and University of Alabama Police Department.
