Truck driver will not face criminal charges for role in deadly I-24 crash

Posted: Updated:

Sue Morris and Hilda Wilson have mastered the waiting game.

The mothers waited patiently outside the Rutherford County Courthouse while the grand jury met inside behind closed doors on Wednesday.

"I will sit here forever, if that's what it takes. I want a decision, and I hope it's the right decision. I hope they charge Stacey Colvin," Wilson said.

Colvin is the man who authorities say slammed his 18-wheeler into the back of a car their children, Deja Morris and Brandon Wilson, were riding in on I-24 in Rutherford County. The couple and a group of friends were on their way to the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Manchester. The two died in the fiery crash.

"You veered out of your lane into our children's lane and slammed into them," Morris said.

By the early afternoon, the waiting was over, but it wasn't the decision they had hoped for. The grand jury did not indict Colvin on criminal charges.

"That is very disappointing. I do believe that Stacey Colvin should be held accountable for the deaths of two young people," Morris said.

The families say they are not done fighting yet. They are expected to return to Tennessee in January, which is when Colvin will appear in court on that citation for failing to exercise due caution.

If found guilty, he faces a $50 fine and up to 30 days in jail. The families are hoping to be able to give impact statements at the hearing. They say they would like to see him get more than just a slap on the wrist.

Both families have filed a civil lawsuit against Colvin and the Kentucky trucking company that employed him.
