RUTHERFORD COUNTY, TN (WSMV) -

Rutherford County firefighters rescued a driver and her puppy from a fiery crash on I-24 last week.

The driver was rushed to the hospital. Firefighters were examining the car when they noticed the puppy hiding in the wreckage.

"I dropped everything, ran over there, grabbed him, told deputies go ahead, before the ambulance leaves, get ahold of the driver and ask her if she had a dog, let her know that I'm going to have him until she can take him back," said Ryan Connelly, a senior firefighter with the Rutherford County Fire Department.

The puppy's owner is expected to be OK. The puppy has been living at a Rutherford County fire station since the crash.

Firefighters say the owner plans on picking up the puppy soon and returning to her hometown of Chattanooga.
