Ice storm warnings issued for parts of the ArkLaTex - WAFF-TV: News, Weather and Sports for Huntsville, AL

UPDATE: ArkLaTex braces for ice storm

Posted: Updated:
Some parts of NE TX, SW AR, and SE OK could see a half an inch of ice Friday night. Some parts of NE TX, SW AR, and SE OK could see a half an inch of ice Friday night.

An Ice Storm Warning goes into effect at midnight for NE TX, SW AR, and SE OK and continue through 6 p.m. on Friday. The affected areas will see lows below freezing, and some places could see up to a half inch of ice accumulating on trees, power lines and bridges.

That much ice could cause dangerous road conditions, and bring down tree limbs that could damage homes and cause widespread power outages, particularly along and north of I-30.

Through the weekend, the cold and wet weather continues to drift south.  More freezing rain is possible in NW LA and SE TX by Sunday morning, with much of the area will see lows below freezing and highs near freezing. Ice accumulation will likely be found as far south as east Texas and northern Louisiana generally along and north of I 20.

The rest of the area will see rain with mid to upper 30s.

Travel is strongly discouraged. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. At home, be prepared for power outages with plenty of blankets, ready to eat food and bottled water. Have a manual can opener to open cans.

Next week looks better but temperatures will be way below normal.
