NORTH ALABAMA (WAFF) -

Thursday was the 21st annual WAFF 48 Holiday Can-a-thon.

Volunteers staffed drop-off locations across North Alabama, collecting canned goods for our neighbors in need.

The cans collected in each community will stay in that community.

The Decatur Mall collection site provided rousing musical accompaniment as neighbors gave 31,094 food items.

In Colbert County, collection crews braved wet conditions in the Walmart parking lot off Avalon in Muscle Shoals. The take here was estimated at almost 600 items.

Lauderdale County got a big boost from Central High School, which dropped off almost 2,200 non-perishable items in Florence.

Volunteers set up a collection van in Russellville. In Guntersville, the United Way of Marshall County decked the halls, or rather, decked the deck of a fishing boat.

Lincoln County celebrated donations of close to 8,000 items. Lawrence County brought in nearly 4,000. Morgan County collected 21,000.

In Huntsville, workers stuffed a truck full of canned goods. Madison County tallied up about 17,000 items, at a time when volunteers said they need all they can get.

"We have 900 families who have signed up for assistance for the Christmas holiday, so we will try and get them a box full of food which contains about 35-50 items," said Courtney Guasti for Christmas Charities Year Round, one of the many organizations who benefit from Can-a-thon donations.

Since the first Can-a-thon in 1992, you've helped us collect more than three million cans of food.

If you missed out on Thurdsday's drive, you still have an opportunity to help out. Donations will continue to be accepted at any Redstone Federal Credit Union location until close of business Monday.
