{DATE LINE OLIVE BRANCH, MS}  (WMC-TV) ANDY, WILL IT WORK?  CONTEGO FIRE-RESISTANT PAINT ON DRYWALL = WISE BUY!

This test is a follow-up to our hottest product test yet!

Only this time, we built a "fire wall" on dry wall to test the fire-resistant paint that's already passed the Andy, Will It Work? test.

Nov. 5, we pulled out all the stops to conduct a live test of Contego's fire-resistant paint and primer, $55 a gallon. The intumescent interior paint expanded when exposed to flame, creating a hard-char barrier that kept the flames away from the plywood-based structure.

It held the fire at bay longer than plywood painted with standard latex, buying firefighters more time to keep a fire from spreading room-to-room and house-to-house.

Capt. Dave Taylor of the Olive Branch Fire Department was on hand for both our live and taped tests. He said he was impressed, but he noted that we applied the paint to plywood instead of dry wall.

"I thought of, maybe, a follow-up test on actual sheet rock, which would simulate more along the lines of the conditions that you've got in your home," he said.

Taylor painted two large sheets of dry wall with Contego's fire-resistant paint/primer. He applied two coats to a 20 mil thickness, per specifications.

After drying for several days, he took a blow-torch to one of them:  1,600 degrees of direct heat, focused right on the painted dry wall. The paint bubbled up and expanded, creating the same hard-char barrier it did on the plywood. All that heat never came close to the dry wall or to its paper layer.

Then Olive Branch firefighters placed two sheets of Contego-painted drywall, mounted on studs, inside a training smokehouse. They simulated a room fire – with one of the Contego-painted "walls" positioned slightly closer to the fire than the other.

18 minutes into the burn, Taylor said temperatures inside the smokehouse spiked between 600 and 700 degrees near the ceiling.

23 minutes into the burn, firefighters extinguished the heat source and removed the painted dry wall sections from the smokehouse. The drywall that was closest to the fire really took some serious heat. But Contego's fire-resistant paint still bubbled up to build its hard-char barrier and blocked the fire from the dry wall.

"That was indirect heat, and it still bubbled up to create that barrier," I told Taylor. "It actually protected like it's supposed to," Taylor replied. "I mean, this is what you'll have in your home. You'll have sheet rock on a studded wall. I'm impressed!"

Contego's fire-resistant paint remains a WISE BUY!
