ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The City of Albertville in Marshall County is looking to revitalize its downtown area. Governor Robert Bentley announced a $24,000 grant to get that process started.

City officials said instead of doing things in a piecemeal fashion, they are looking to develop a master plan for the entire downtown area.

That starts with hiring an engineering firm to develop a plan for the city. City officials want to take a look at the city's streets, lighting and signage, as well as storefront facades to develop a look that will bring people to Downtown.

The process will be a slow one, as officials anticipate it will take five to ten years to obtain additional grant money to make the plan a reality. Melody Whitten with the City of Albertville said many people only see Albertville's Downtown as a two-block area.

"We want to expand that downtown area to be a larger perimeter so that we can grow our business district. People want to come back to Downtown to shop local, to eat in our restaurants, and to have some nightlift," said Whitten.

Whitten said once an engineer is selected they will seek the public's input for ideas on the area.
