TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

Police in Tuscumbia responded to an overnight shooting investigators said was related to the murder of a Deshler volunteer coach last week.

The body of Brioni "Bree" Rutland was discovered Friday afternoon in the Tennessee River. Authorities charged Jeremy Williams in connection with Rutland's murder.

On Monday night, authorities said Gregory Williams, the brother of Jeremy Williams, shot Rutland's cousin, Lonell Hankins. The shooting happened just after 11 p.m. outside a residence on Gail Street in Tuscumbia.

According to witnesses, Williams was outside of the house when Hankins pulled up and punched Williams. The two started fighting, fell to the ground and shots were fired. Witnesses said Hankins got up and ran into the house.

Williams left the scene and was later turned in to authorities by his father. Williams was charged with attempted murder and booked into the Colbert County Jail on $500,000 bond.

Hankins is currently in ICU at Huntsville Hospital.

Authorities are asking those in the community to respect the family and to honor Bree's memory by keeping the peace as they face this difficult time.

"They've called for common peace, and that's the message that we'd like to relay. Let us do our job, let the justice system handle this, and let's stay calm and peaceful and honor Brioni," said Police Chief Tony Logan.
