Coach Dodd Lee had his 10 and 2 Maroon Tide out on the practice field Monday afternoon under perfect weather conditions.
There was a little sprinkle when practice first began, but the sun later came out.
The Chargers from Oxford are highly talented having run off a perfect 14-0 season. Coach Lee had his offense simulate the Chargers offense against his Maroon Tide defense in preparation for Saturday's title game.
Lee said,"Oxford presents so many problems for you offensively and they real physical and run well to the football defensively. They throw a lot of different screens, throw the ball well vertical. Their screen game is the best we've seen all year."
Picayune is going after a second 5A State Championship title since 2011. The Maroon Tide beat Starkville 38-21 in Jackson that year to win-it-all.
Back in 1986 on a wet cold night in Clinton, Picayune won the 4A State Championship.
The game was played on a muddy football field on the campus of Mississippi College in Clinton and Picayune dominated Clarksdale 24 to 6.
Maroon Tide head coach Calvin Triplett watched running back Demetric Hall make a big splash on that wet field, ripping off 239 yards rushing and he exploded into the Clarksdale end zone three times.
Back in 1986 after winning the championship Calvin Triplett said,"I guess, poor coaching. You don't feel you've got potential and you come up and win a state championship. But I didn't think we had , gee whiz they have come along way and done a great job.
Was the game the greatest in his coaching career?
Triplette responded by saying,"Yes it is. I'd have to say it is. I've been lucky enough to win a state championship before in Florida but his was a great win. "
A year after claiming the 5A State Championship Triplett was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Triplett passed away in 2001, but he'll always be remembered for what he accomplished in the coaching ranks.
Dodd Lee was on the Maroon Tide coaching staff in 1986. He served as Picayune's defensive coordinator.
Lee has now built his own coaching success. In 18 seasons he has guided the Maroon Tide to the state playoffs 15 times and he's going after a second state championship.
