MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

The City of Madison broke ground Tuesday on a long-awaited transportation project.

Governor Robert Bentley made an appearance at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new I-565 interchange at County Line Road.

"The construction of the Interchange at I-565 and County Line Road will enhance the transportation infrastructure in the Madison area and help keep travel flowing smoothly. Our transportation dollars are scarce, but this project is a wise investment in the future growth of the City of Madison," said Gov. Bentley.

The new interchange will provide access for motorists to and from I-565 to Madison Boulevard and County Line Road. Drivers from Madison and Limestone Counties will have another access point to the interstate.

Madison Mayor Troy Trulock said the interchange will cost $17.2 million. He said the city is paying ten percent of that, and the rest is coming from federal funds.

The project has been repeatedly postponed due to cost issues.

Tuesday's ceremony was held at the project site off County Line Road next to I-565 in Madison. Motorists and businesses near the area agreed that the project couldn't have waited much longer.

"It's about time. Once they install this it's going to cut down my commute in half and probably a little bit more," said Limestone County resident Lynsey Leslie. She said she is done fighting red lights and constant traffic on University Drive.

"I'll be able to spend more time with my children and get dinner on the table much sooner," Leslie said.

Glendora Taylor, manager of Last Resort Guns near County Line Road, said the project will bring even more people by the shop. Even better she said, it could open up the Huntsville customer base because those people will finally have a direct path to the store.

The project has a targeted completion date of May 2015.
