HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Authorities have confirmed the identity of the man accused of a fatal shooting on Wednesday.

Madison County Jail Chief Steve Morrison said that Jeremy Primus, a Madison County Detention Center officer, has been accused of shooting and killing Jason Akeem Lewis on Galaxy Way in Huntsville. Authorities said Primus shot Lewis multiple times.

Morrison said Primus left the scene following the shooting, but later turned himself in to Huntsville Police. Morrison, who is not involved in the investigation, also said Primus claims the shooting was in self-defense.

Primus has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, and has not been arrested or charged at this time.

Residents at the apartment complex where Lewis was shot said they hope police conduct a fair and thorough investigation.
