SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

Sheffield Police said they believe they are closer to finding the man responsible for an October rape at the Colbert Square Apartments, but they are still asking for the community's help.

Chief Greg Ray said the physical evidence collected at the scene has been given priority at the forensics lab in Huntsville. He said while they are waiting on results, his men are constantly patrolling the streets looking for the suspect.

Investigators said the man claimed to be looking for someone, and when the victim opened the door to talk to him, he forced his way inside and sexually assaulted her.

Police said the man attempted to clean up the scene and then forced the woman outside naked, stealing her car and cell phone. Investigators later determined the man went to two other apartments with the same story, trying to find a victim.

Chief Ray said his men are working around the clock trying to identify the attacker.

"We're cognizant of the fact that he may not be from here, he may be traveling. We don't know that he hasn't struck somewhere else. We certainly hope he hasn't. We feel confident that he hasn't done anything in this area that's been reported to us, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen again tomorrow. We certainly hope it doesn't," Ray said.

If you have any idea who is responsible, or if you think you recognize the man in the sketch, call the Sheffield Police Department immediately.
