FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Volunteers in the Shoals made Thursday a happier Thanksgiving for more than 2,000 people.

Thursday morning, crews worked to stuff to-go boxes and fill-up plates inside the First United Methodist Church in Florence, the culmination of a week-long labor of love of volunteers.

Service started at 11 a.m., and in 30 minutes, nearly 1,000 meals had been distributed.

Organizers said the service is much bigger than just the church.

"It is a community project now. We have people from several different churches in the area, we have people who don't even attend church that have come and they help. They want to serve and they want to participate in this, because they feel a need to truly serve others.

Volunteers will be back to work again soon, preparing and serving meals on Christmas Eve.
