FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

2,500 people in the Shoals will enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal, thanks to a generous church family in Florence.

"It's incredible to think there are 2,500 meals that will go out, which means there are 2,500 people and families that don't have access to the kinds of Thanksgiving that most of us know and look forward to," said volunteer Lisa Keys Matthews.

Volunteers of all ages from the First United Methodist Church and the local community have come together for the last eight years to help those in need.

"Last year we did about 2,000 and saw the need, so we're doing 500 more," Matthews explained.

The work began on Monday and each day the workload has increased. Wednesday, students out of school helped make sweet potato casserole and fill sides of cranberry sauce.

For volunteers like Lisa, it's a small way to give back to an even greater cause.

"It's important to realize, as lucky as we are, not everybody has been able to have the circumstances that we have. If we can help somebody get on their feet or help somebody make it through the day, than it's all the more better," said Matthews.

Dinners will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the FUMC in Florence. Volunteers will also work with the Meals on Wheels program to deliver Thanksgiving to those who cannot attend in person.
