FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) -

The Fort Payne City Council will soon entertain a proposal for a brew pub to begin operation in the downtown area, even though draft beer is not legal in the town.

Mayor Larry Chesser said a state law does allow an exemption for pubs that make their own brew. The mayor said the man who started the brew pub in Montgomery is looking to put one in the downtown area. The mayor feels if it helps the downtown area, he's all for it.

"We're just looking at the possibility, any possibility of bringing more people downtown, whatever it may be. This is just one avenue that we've got to look at," said Chesser.

The brew pub is expected to be a topic of discussion at a city council workshop meeting scheduled for Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
