COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Volunteers at organizations across the Chattahoochee Valley area are cooking to feed hundreds of people a free Thanksgiving meal.

The meals are being served in dining halls, churches and work places to help those who cannot afford a fancy Thanksgiving dinners this year.

Words of Wisdom Christian Center gave out food packages instead of meals. The packages had vegetables and other fresh ingredients that people can use to make their own delicious Thanksgiving meals.

Volunteers at the Feed the Needy event hosted their second annual Thanksgiving meal at United Tax Service building on S. Lumpkin Rd. It was the only free food giveaway event held in South Columbus, and the volunteers were prepared to serve about 500 people this year.

"We are just trying to give back to the community," explained Antonio Sauls, a volunteer for Feed the Needy. "We had donations from many people and different businesses to carry out this event."

Garner Bass C.M.E Church Missionary Department held their free Thanksgiving meal buffet in Phenix City, Ala. They served southern food for people who could not celebrate Thanksgiving with families and friends this year.

Joyce Primm with Garner Bass C.M.E. Church Missionary Department explains, "We welcome everyone, but we are looking to serve the needy, the sick, and our veterans. We want to share what we have, and we also want to honor our veterans. They did so much for us, so it is now our turn to give back."

These events were held in different areas, but they had a few things in common. The volunteers hoped to feed as many people they could and to honor God while serving others.

"We hope to serve many people because we want to show support," Antonio Sauls said. "We are doing this in the Lord's name."

Julia Steward and Henry Tolbert live in Columbus, and they wanted to try free Thanksgiving meals for the first time.

"I will be working on Thanksgiving," Julia Steward said. "I'm looking to make some new friends, and enjoy Thanksgiving with those who might not be able to."

"I think this kind of service comes from God," Henry Tolbert said. "God is the reason for all this…"
