TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Expanding one of the busiest roads in Tuscaloosa Countyis the subject of a public meeting Tuesday.

The state plans to work on Highway 69 to help improve traffic. Some people, like Rep. John Merrill says it's also about safety and encouraging economic growth.

The county and ALDOT are splitting the cost of a $400,00 comprehensive study of Highway 69 south traffic problems. The stretch from Skyland Boulevard to the Hale County line is under review. Road work hasn't begun.

Since 1998, Merrill says more than 60 subdivisions and shopping centers have developed along Highway 69 south. He believes traffic jams increase response times for emergency vehicles.

There's also concern people could decide not to move to or shop in the area as a result of the traffic problems.

Officials want the public's input before going forward with any changes. Some who attended the meeting say a quick fix would be to improve the traffic signals.

"We've got red lights down through here and controlling red lights through here and possible even widening the roads," Shawn Morrow said.
