Two Arab High School students face expulsion after being caught smoking marijuana in a school parking lot.

Both students were caught by a school resource officer on Monday, Nov. 18, while sitting in a car after school officials saw unauthorized pedestrian traffic in the parking lot.

Superintendent John Mullins said the school will recommend expulsion for both students and that the case has been turned over to the police and the juvenile court system as required by law.

"Expulsion is harsh," said Mullins.  "We do work with the parents and students and try to maintain a pathway to graduation for the students.  We want them to return, we will work with them."

According to the Arab City Schools student handbook, "It is the intent of the Arab City Board of Education to impose disciplinary sanction, including expulsion and possible referral for prosecution, upon students who violate the standard of conduct relative to the possession, use, and distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol."

This is the first drug arrest on the Arab school campus this year.

"We do feel like we do a good job of policing the campus," said Mullins.

Both students' parents have been notified and can request a hearing before the board about the expulsion recommendation. Unlike larger districts, there isn't an alternative school for the students to attend if they're expelled. The district said the students will have an opportunity to take summer courses and catch back up before the next school year.

"We talk to them about drugs. We have programs to teach them and they knew better. They got caught and they'll have to suffer the consequenses," Mullins said.

No hearing dates have been set at this point.
