FLORENCE – A second-half offensive explosion by the University of North Alabama men's basketball team carried the Lions to a 94-57 exhibition win over Oakwood Monday evening at Flowers Hall.
After scoring just 34 points in the opening 20 minutes of play, the Lions shot 70 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away. UNA led 34-25 at the half and held a 46-35 advantage with 14:22 remaining. A 10-0 run pushed the lead to 21 points and the Lions never looked back.
Rashaun Claiborne scored a game-high 19 points to lead five UNA players in double figures. Nathan Spehr connected on a pair of three-point baskets and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to finish with 14 points while Jere Vucica, Bruce Adams and Devin McNeil added 13 points each.
North Alabama finished the game shooting 55.4 percent from the floor, including a 21-of-31 showing in the second half. The Lions also had 12 steals and scored 27 points off turnovers.
UNA will return to regular-season play over the weekend at the Florida Southern/Ledger Hotel Classic in Lakeland, Fla. The Lions will play St. Joseph's at 4:15 p.m. CST on Friday while the fifth-ranked and host Mocs will face Stillman in the late game. There will be a championship and consolation games the following day.
