ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A 50-year-old woman is in custody after Gadsden police say she killed her boyfriend by stabbing him in the chest on Friday.

Gadsen police officers and medics responded to an assault at a home on Dwight Avenue around 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22. When they got to the scene, they found 52-year-old Robert Culverson dead on the kitchen floor. Police say he was stabbed once in his chest, near his heart.

The victim's girlfriend, Peggy Martin, was sitting on the front porch with two neighbors when police arrived. The neighbors said Martin went next door and asked them to check on Culverson because she had stabbed him.

Martin was arrested for murder and is being held in the Etowah County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Culverson's body was sent to Huntsville for an autopsy, Captain Bobby Jackson with GPD said.

Police say the case is still under investigation.
