COURTLAND, AL (WAFF) -

Eight families were displaced after a fire at an apartment complex in Courtland.

The fire started around 10 a.m. Friday at Courtland Village apartments on Water Street. Firefighters battled the blaze for more than an hour and a half before they got it contained.

The entire building was gutted, destroying everything in its path.

Officials said the fire started on a stove in a lower-level apartment and spread.

All of the families made it out unharmed, many with just the clothes on their backs.

"Last night when I laid down, I had a roof over my head. Tonight when I lay down, I don't have a roof," said resident Chelcie Clopton.

The Red Cross has stepped in to assist the displaced families.
