HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - It's an oldie but a goodie, as far as scams go – "You have been selected to receive a government grant!"
Michele Mason with the Better Business Bureau said after the government shutdown, people reported being contacted by individuals who told them they'd been selected. Two things are wrong with this scenario: one, the government will not contact you unsolicited to offer you a grant.
Secondly, "If the government is shut down, they are certainly not contacting people and telling them they are selected for money. The government is already concerned about their budget. They are not going to be randomly contacting people trying to give away money," Mason said.
If you ever receive such a call and are suspicious, do not make a hasty decision. If you really were selected, Mason said you should be able to check it out. Verify the offer is legit and that you are still eligible.
