LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The discovery of a suspicious package in Decatur led to evacuations at schools within a five-mile radius of the Daikin plant, including East Lawrence County.

Students there were bused to the Lawrence County Coliseum, where parents signed them out.

School officials said they implemented their evacuation plans as soon as they were briefed by EMA officials.

"We immediately started making calls to principals and the transportation department to make plans. The main thing was to get them away from that five-mile radius," said Lawrence Co. Superintendent Heath Grimes.

Just after 11 a.m. Thursday, nearly 20 buses loaded with students arrived at the Coliseum to ensure their safety. An estimated 1,200 kids, grades K-12, were evacuated.

Officials said parents had a 20-minute window to pick their children up from the school, afterwards they had to come to the Coliseum to sign them out. They said they followed their protocol to make the transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved.
