18-year-old arrested in attempted Union Springs ATM theft - WAFF-TV: News, Weather and Sports for Huntsville, AL

Teen accused of trying to steal Union Springs ATM

A teenager is in the Bullock County Jail facing a list of charges related to a bank burglary.

Authorities say 18-year-old Stanley Davis tried to use a crowbar to pull out the ATM machine on the side of Community Bank and Trust Monday night around 6:45.

"He apparently was determined to get some of that money," said Union Springs Police Chief Clarence Wheeler.

The suspect was unsuccessful in pulling the ATM out so investigators say he then broke into the bank to try to finish the job and was once again unsuccessful.

Cops were on the scene within a minute of the alarm. Suspect Stanley Davis was captured about a block away.

Chief Wheeler says Davis confessed. Davis remains in the Bullock County jail on a $100,000 bond.

According to a family member, Davis was attending welding school in Eufaula. We're told if the allegations are true "this was out of character" for Davis.

That family member declined to go on camera as well as Community Bank and Trust President Dave Bryant. Bryant did tell WSFA 12 News by phone he commended the police department for apprehending the suspect.

Although no money was taken, Davis reportedly caused around $30,000 worth of damage.

The bank was open for business Tuesday except for the taped off area surrounding the damaged ATM machine.
