MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Madison County fire burned dangerously close to several homes, and destroyed at least one building Thursday. It happened off Homestead Road, just off of Winchester Road.

Firefighters scrambled to put out the flames, and what made this grass fire unique is that it happened in the middle of a neighborhood, and within seconds, firefighters said multiple yards were on fire.

Fire crews were unable to save one shed that sat in a backyard. Both neighbors and firefighters said they have no idea how the fire started.

The fire did not damage any homes, although it did burn within feet of other structures. Emergency crews said this is a type of fire that you typically see out west, in places like Arizona or California. They said because conditions are so dry it's creating the perfect environment for these types of small grass fires to pop up.

Crews said all it takes is one spark, and without warning, you can have a raging fire in a backyard.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
