COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A nurse who left a note in a child's room classifying him as a "loser" because he was not vaccinated is keeping her job with Palmetto Health.

The system concluded its investigation Monday and, at the request of the family, retained the team members involved in the November 4 incident at Palmetto Health Children's Hospital.

"Taking the family's input into consideration, Palmetto Health leadership decided to place those team members into immediate corrective action, following the organization's process for addressing and resolving employee behavior issues," wrote spokesperson Tammie Epps. "As part of their efforts, the team members will participate in a plan to ensure every Palmetto Health team member understands and recommits to our organization's standards of behavior."

The Smart family filed a complaint with Palmetto Health after the unidentified nurse left the following note in their 9-month-old's room:

235

need to tx

fever

0 immunizations

Loser!

Katie and Trevor were offended.

"This kind of inappropriate behavior is unacceptable and unprofessional," said Trevor referencing the word "loser."

"For her to say that, she doesn't know why I choose not to vaccinate," said Katie.

The Smarts said they chose not to vaccinate two of their three children after researching the ingredients of vaccinations.

Palmetto Health placed the staff member on administrative leave and apologized to the Smart family.

"We again want to apologize for what happened," said Epps late Thursday. "It did not reflect our standards of behavior our customers expect from every Palmetto Health employee, and we are committed to using this experience to ensure we deliver the health care experience our patients and their families want and deserve."

The Smarts hope other families who make the same choice not to vaccinate their children are not subjected to the same treatment.
