Mayor pushes for Boaz aquatic center approval

The proposed center would refurbish the old outlet mall. The proposed center would refurbish the old outlet mall.

A proposal for an aquatics center in Boaz is back on the table. City leaders will revisit the proposal, some three months after the city council voted it down.

Mayor Tim Walker said last year it was a vision of his five years earlier with a previous council. Now he hopes to re-sell the idea to the current council.

The aquatics and recreation center project is proposed to go where the old outlet malls have stood for decades. At a price tag of $20 million, council members voted the project down, opting for a smaller, scaled-down version.

Mayor Walker is hoping council members will reconsider the project and its price tag, saying it is more than just a rec center. He envisions regional sports competitions coming to the area, which will include banquet facilities surrounded by shops and attractions. He is planning to give council members a first-hand look at other successful locations.

"It will be not only to help us shore up our revenue opportunities for the future for our town, but it will also be another tool in our chest for industrial recruitment, for improvements in education, and overall health in our community," said Walker.

Mayor Walker does not expect another vote for some time. He said he anticipates it will take a few months to make his case as to why the project should be done.
