Jadeveon Clowney's production only a 'minor issue', say NFL execs

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Before the 2013 season, he was immortal; a man with limitless potential and sky high skills if you listened to ESPN and other sports analysts.

But this season brought junior defensive end Jadeveon Clowney back to earth.

While his ability to be a disruptive force on the defensive line has never been debated, his tackle and sack statistics this season hasn't provided enough sustenance for the talking heads.

The question turned from "What's wrong with Clowney?" to "Will his production this season affect his NFL stock?"

Well, according to a report from NFL.com, the answer to that second question is pretty simple: Not really.

An NFL Media Analyst asked five different NFL executives if Clowney's declining numbers were enough to hurt him in the 2014 NFL Draft, and all said it nothing to worry about.

"Not a major concern," said one executive. "He's proven his ability to get to the quarterback. He's maybe not as clean of a prospect as he was before the season, but I still think he's going to be a stud in the NFL."

"It would be a big concern if he didn't have consistent stretches of production during his career," said another executive. "He's been very productive in the previous two seasons. I'm not that worried about him."

Clowney has measured just two sacks this season after getting 13 last season. However, the Gamecocks still have plenty of season left considering a potential SEC Championship spot and a definite bowl game await.
