DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Thousands of dollars in sales tax owed to Morgan County could soon be forgiven.

Belle Foods claimed Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this year and closed down its Food World grocery store on Sixth Avenue in Decatur.

The company claimed $42 million in debt and owes Morgan County almost $14,000 in sales tax.

A vote to forgive the tax was on Tuesday's Morgan County Commission agenda, but the board decided to have the county's attorney and revenue commissioner look over their options first.

"We're going to try. This was not something that just happened overnight. We've been doing what we needed to do, but it just [doesn't] look like there's much of a chance we'd get it (the tax money)," said County Commission Chair Ray Long.

Commissioners are expected to vote whether to forgive the debt at their next meeting.
