DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Officials wanted to break ground by October on the new Morgan County Jail Annex, but that has yet to happen. According to County Commission Chair Ray Long, officials had set that beginning date before the City of Decatur jumped on board the project in late September.

When the city agreed to share some costs on construction and maintenance, the project went from a two-story building to a three-story facility to accommodate room for city inmates. Before the city's commitment, the plans were already finished.

Long said the architect started over from scratch and they are about halfway done with the new design. Another change since the project merger is that the annex, which was previously to be built separate from the current jail, will instead be added onto the jail.

"We're saving roughly a million dollars by moving it back and hooking on. They're going to be able to use the space that's already there. I would love, sometime in January, to have a groundbreaking and get started. I would like to do it next week, but being realistic, it'll probably be somewhere around the January timeframe," Long said.

It is currently unknown if the new plans will push back the opening of the annex, which was expected to be next October. Long said they will know more about an opening date when the new design is finished.
