VINA, AL (WAFF) -

The superintendent of Franklin County Schools will ask the school board to end the contract of a teacher accused of having sex with a student.

Friday, deputies arrested Vina physical education teacher Sonny Tibbs. He is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student on multiple occasions. Tibbs has since been suspended with pay.

Superintendent Gary Williams said a letter was sent to Tibbs Tuesday afternoon regarding Williams' desire to have the school board terminate Tibbs' teaching contract. The teacher will have 15 days to respond before the case is discussed at a board meeting.

Williams said Tibbs' arrest is disappointing, both to the school and community.

"The punishment for this type of situation is severe. It's going to be life-changing. People are going to think negative of it – and they should, it's justified – but hopefully this time around, this is the end of this. Of course, we can't guarantee it, but maybe enough lessons have been learned that this won't happen again," he said.

Investigators said Tibbs has confessed to the accusations, but Superintendent Williams said his actions have already affected the community.

"I'd like to say to the parents of Vina and all the Franklin County schools that we don't condone this type of behavior and we will take measures to stop it… I want to say I hope it's the last time it happens; that this will put an end to it," he said.

Sheriff Shannon Oliver agreed with the superintendent's view that the arrest was a disappointment to the community. He wants to remind parents to keep an open line of communication with their children, and recommended playing a key role in your child's school life to help reduce the risk of your son or daughter becoming a victim.

"I think it's easier sometimes said than done, but keep an open line of communication and cell phone, keep in contact with who they're texting and talking to, and really get to know their teachers," he said.

Tibbs is the second Vina teacher to be arrested for having sex with a students. Deputies arrested Kimberly Bynum in 2011. Charges against Bynum have since been dropped.
