Tuscaloosa police are releasing details of an investigation involving one of their motorcycle officers who shot and killed a dog after it charged.

The police department says the shooting was in self-defense.

According to TPD, the officer parked his motorcycle at a home in the Eastern Hills subdivision where he was taking his morning break on Sunday, Nov. 3. The officer said two dogs charged him, a white pit bull and a large, brown dog that appeared to be a pit bull/lab mix.

Police say the brown dog was "snarling and bearing his teeth" while he ran toward the officer in the driveway.

When the dog was about 13 feet away, the officer shot it twice to stop it from attacking, and two other times to end the animal's suffering. Police say the second dog ran away after hearing the first shot.

The dead dog did not have any identification on it and police could not find its owner at first. The dog's owner was eventually located and came to the police station on Monday, Nov. 11 to be informed about the situation.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department conducted an internal investigation and determined the officer acted within their policy to protect himself from a vicious dog.
