HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The drop in temperatures can wreak havoc on your plants, but Bennett Nurseries in Huntsville said there are things you can do to protect your garden.

Charlotte Webster said it's normal for plants to go into a dormant stage during cold temperatures, and you don't want to protect them too much.

Webster advised, "You most certainly would want to protect the root system, and to do that you might go to the effort of moving the plants into the garage, an unheated space, for that short period of time, or simply lean up bays of mulch, or whatever you have, around the root system to give it a little more insulation."

For vegetables, Webster suggested throwing a frost cloth or sheet over them.
