Gadget claims to make gourmet meals in microwave

What a blessing to know the Blocker family!

Their Blocker's Soul Food in old town Olive Branch, MS, 9119 Pigeon Roost Rd., is the home of baked and fried chicken, catfish, collard greens, sweet potatoes – and the family recipe "Blessing Dressing!"

We're hoping the Stone Wave microwave cooker is a blessing, too – and a value at $19.98.

"The secret is this specially-designed chimney that allows steam to escape, while the custom dome circulates heat evenly, infusing flavor into food," boasts its commercial.

"That's a sound cooking claim," said Chef Chris Blocker. "I'd like to see if it works."

One of the Stone Wave cooker's claims is to make "perfect" poached eggs.

That didn't happen.

After three attempts – first, following the directions, then altering the amount of water in the cooker, adjusting cooking time, even changing microwave ovens – the Stone Wave never poached an egg well. The egg stuck to the cooker's so-called "non-stick" surface, too.

Blocker then followed the Stone Wave's recipe for cooking an omelet, complete with peppers and onions. Once again, it stuck a little bit to the non-stick surface, but the omelet turned out fluffy and tasty.

Then Blocker cored a sweet onion, inserted a measured amount of butter and a beef bouillon cube and placed it in the Stone Wave.

"Put it in the microwave for four minutes, and you won't believe the heavenly aroma," said the Stone Wave's commercial, as it claims it will sauté the onion.

When the Stone Wave came out of the microwave, the onion looked as if it had been sautéed.

"It smells great," said Blocker. "It cooks evenly."

It tasted sautéed, too – evenly cooked throughout the onion. Perfect for topping a burger or filling a French onion soup.

The Stone Wave microwave cooker's non-stick surface does stick. You will have to use a non-stick spray, butter or margarine with a few of its recipes.

You can also forget poaching an egg with it.

But the Stone Wave did cook two out of three dishes, including two of its more challenging recipes.

"Overall, I think it's OK," said Blocker. "It's a good value for $20."
