HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The job market can be tough for anyone, especially our Veterans. Going from fighting on the front lines to finding a job can be an adjustment, but it's a battle they don't have to do alone.

Douglas Dutcher is an Army Specialist who severed in Iraq and Kuwait. He said going from fighting the enemy overseas to finding the right spot in the job market as a civilian can take some getting use to.

"It can be pretty difficult," he said.  "You have certain jobs in the military that don't translate at all in the civilian world."

But there are buffers in the Valley to help bridge the employment gap.

"There are a lot of good organizations that come through and they pick up assets you may not have realized you have," Dutcher said.

Still Serving Veterans in Huntsville is one of them. Director of Community Affairs and Operations Shannon Drake said they help about 130 veterans a month.

"Our mission is to empower our veterans, wounded warriors and their families as they transition out of military and in to civilian life," Drake said.  "It's never a slow moment when we are trying to help them find jobs. They are coming from a structured environment most of the time. Some of them have come right out of high school or right out of college and never had to write a resume before so we help them do that."

Dutcher said he is thankful for and that it helps him and others like him prepare for a different kind of routine.

"When you get a civilian job, the hours are better because you have a set time frame but at the same time it instills the discipline in you," he said.

Workers at Still Serving Vets said they help with resume writing, interview skills and more. They don't turn away any vet that walks through their doors.
