Doctors study effects of multiple concussions

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

There are new guidelines when dealing with concussions.

Doctors are now focusing more attention on when it's safe for a student to return to school or to the playing field.

Doctors at Huntsville Pediatrics said they get most their concussion patients during the fall, when students are playing sports and gymnastics.

Dr. Sarah Pettigrew M.D. said, "We're worried about them having another injury on top of their initial injury and worsening their symptoms. There's been several studies looking at long term effects of multiple concussions and all of them have shown poor prognosis if you have another injury on top of your initial concussion."

Doctors say most patients get better within three weeks after suffering a concussion.
