Madison couple robbed after raising money for charity

A couple hoping to raise money for a charity were reportedly burglarized in Madison.

The Madison Martial Arts Academy hosted a 24-hour gaming marathon called "Extra Life" to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network.

After the charity drive, the organizers said they packed up all the gaming equipment and drove home. Hours later, they said thieves broke into their car and stole many items.

The break-in was reported to authorities, who said several other cars in the neighborhood were also hit that night. Fortunately, the $500 raised for the Children's Miracle Network was not in the car at the time of the crime.

Russell Newquist, who was in charge of the event, said, "Coming from an event like that and then coming home and finding several thousand dollars worth of equipment stolen is a bit like a punch to the gut. To be honest, you lose a little bit of faith in humanity."

Some of the items stolen belonged to the organizers, but several were borrowed.

Items stolen included:

  • Two projectors
  • A 720p HD Toshiba Flat screen TV, 36", with some damage/scratching in the upper right hand corner of the screen
  • An old Digital 8 camcorder
  • A green Dell laptop (with a Newquist Solutions sticker on the bottom)
  • A white Wii with no controllers, cables, hookups, etc.
  • 50 or 60 Xbox and Wii Games, including
    • Two almost complete sets of Rock Band/Guitar Hero game discs, definitely including doubles of The Beatles: Rock Band, Guitar Hero: Metallica, and others
    • A University of Georgia bag with assorted Xbox and Wii games, including LEGO Batman 2, a couple of Assassin's Creed games, Epic Mickey, and an old Gamecube game called Eternal Darkness
    • A large black box of Xbox games, including some unusual titles such as The Michael Jackson Experience
  • A blue bag of somewhat unusual A/V connectors, Xbox controllers, an Xbox battery charger and other similar assorted items.
  • Two white Xbox controllers with black battery packs
