DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Decatur police arrested a convicted sex offender on Thursday.
Police reported that Harriett Carter was released from Morgan County Jail on Aug. 28, and that she registered with the Decatur Police Department, as required by law. However, the residence she registered, 401 Memorial Drive Southwest, was not a compliant address, but was allowed for seven days, according to authorities. Police said Carter was warned that after the seventh day, she had to be compliant or face criminal charges.
On Sept. 4, police said that after numerous attempts to contact and locate Carter, police obtained felony warrants for failing to register a compliant address as a sex offender and for living at a prohibited residence location, due to the nearness of the address to West Decatur Elementary School.
Officers said that on Sept. 12, Carter was arrested by her probation officer for violating her probation. Police executed their felony warrants on Nov. 7. Carter was booked into Decatur City Jail and transferred back to Morgan County Jail, where she is being held on a probation hold and bonds of $5,000 in total.
