MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Two Valley cities are reaping the benefits from a stretch of highway that's getting a bundle of businesses. Highway 72 is an area that is always growing, and Madison and Huntsville mayors said they want to keep it that way.

"There's just been a big growth in terms of the number of businesses that have been springing up in the Huntsville Madison area," said Madison County resident John Moore.  "There are grocery stores, department stores, food chains and restaurants. It's been a big improvement within the last few years."

An improvement that Madison Mayor Troy Trulock said is exciting because it gives people options and draws more people to the area.

"There are great new places for our residents to shop and for those transiting through from different cities are coming through," said Trulock.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said the business boom on the highway is a good economic impact for Madison, Huntsville and Madison County.

"That area is an area that is always growing," Battle said.  "All of it together is one of our growth quarters for the city of Huntsville."

Battle said city leaders have a plan to handle the growth of the highway and the traffic that comes with it.

"We have been working a traffic study for a long time so people can get through there faster and easier," he said.

Trulock said he's been in talks with the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP) about the busy stretch.

"We're proud to get their support," he said. "We're proud to be improving Highway 72 and allowing more traffic flow, but of course with that traffic flow will come more businesses as well."

Trulock said over the next couple of months there will be more announcements about some things that could be coming to the growing highway.

Scattered rain showers will linger this evening, especially east of I-65. There’s also a cold front still to our west that will move through the Valley with time overnight. Another round of heavier showers may develop along that front, but no severe weather is expected.
